Chapter 7: 10,000 feet
At a gas station, he stopped to get a map. "Let's see. The closest heavy duty mountains are far to the northwest, but they're the best shot we got. There's a considerable open stretch to get there, but for a while, we'll be in places much too crowded for any tricks." Reina slumped "we're dead." "That's the spirit. Way to cheer us up." "They've got us, they're just fooling around now." "A rabbit doesn't just sit around when a snake's in his face. He carves a chance into a hopeless situation and goes all out." "What odds do we have?" "If I can get to the mountains, we can blow it into the mountainside without even hitting our car. We're just gonna have to move fast."

The GNX tore out of the parking lot, wheels spinning. Reina made sure she was buckled in tight this trip. It would be nonstop-over 3 days driving crammed into 20 hours going over 130mph average, and that's just to have the best shot at getting there before they fire; if they shoot earlier, we're dead. They got onto the highway, going a steady 140mph. "if I go too fast, I eat up all my fuel, too slow, and they'll catch me in the open, gotta balance this race well." Cops tried to catch up with the car, but it kept going steadily, able to corner through the high-speed traffic much better than the cops were.

Reina stared at Rick. He usually looked like he was plotting murder when driving, but now, he was calm. His eyes stared blankly at the road, his muscles relaxed. "He's changed…" she whimpered softly. The smooth movements of the car were almost unreal. Reina still felt the G's, but it felt entirely different now. It was almost like she could curl up and sleep if she wanted to. The way he pulled the steering wheel had now softened into gentle twists. There seemed to be hundreds of sirens wailing behind them, but even so, it seemed like the cops didn't even exist. "How are you doing this?" she asked. He only flicked his ear, unable to break this perfect concentration on the road. She looked at the gauges. He kept the car moving at around 140, but he didn't rev higher than 3,000. She knew little about cars, but she knew that this had to have some significance. The GNX rode on as cops spun their tires on through the snowy, curved highway.
